The Ultimate Citizenship
But {we are different, because} our citizenship is in heaven. Philippians 3:20a
๐ A World Obsessed with Borders
One of the loudest conversations echoing across todayโs media is that of bordersโterritories in dispute, nations clashing over land, people wrestling for belonging. Itโs not just politics; itโs deeply human.
Both animals and humans are territorial by nature. But tragically, in our fallen world, this instinct often manifests in the ugliest of waysโwars, invasions, oppression, and power grabs. From the beginning, God created mankind and gave us dominionโyes, but dominion over the earth, not over one another.
“God gave us dominion over the earthโnot over each other.”
From the very beginning, God instructed mankind to โbe fruitful, multiply, replenish the earth, and subdue itโ (Genesis 1:28). But never once did He tell us to dominate our fellow man. That drive came laterโafter sin entered the world. And with it came envy, pride, and bloodshed.
๐ From Cain to Kingdoms at War
The story of Cain and Abel marked the beginning of mankind’s descent into brotherly rivalry. And ever since, nations have risen against nationsโdriven by the same corrupt hunger: dominance and self-exaltation.
James asked plainly:
โWhere do wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members?โ โ James 4:1. We fight. We divide. We hoard. We dominate for our selfish gain.
Having lived in Africa, Europe, and North America, I can tell you this: human nature is the same everywhere. Flags and cultures may changeโbut the human heart longs for control, security, and supremacy.
๐ Jesus Rejected an Earthly Crown
When Jesus walked the earth, the people tried to make Him king. But He refused.
He did not come to build an earthly empireโHe came to reveal a heavenly Kingdom.
A Kingdom where all are welcome.
A Kingdom where no one is disqualified.
A Kingdom where the passport is free, and citizenship is eternal.
๐ The Ultimate Passport
This is no ordinary passport.
There are no borders, no entry bans, no tariffs, no fear of being deported.
“Here, everyone is a citizen who comes through Jesus Christ.” Here, in the Kingdom of God, you can walk boldly into the presence of the Father through Jesus. You are not a stranger or an alienโyou are a citizen of heaven, a son or daughter of the King. You belong. You have access to everything in the Kingdom, to ask anything according to His will and be assured that He hears and answers.
In this Kingdom:
- Leaders serve instead of dominate.
- Peace, not power, is the culture.
- Grace, not greed, is the language.
- And the King Himself laid down His life to make room for you.
๐ Access Granted
Through Jesus, we have unrestricted access to the Father.
โLet us then approach Godโs throne of grace with confidenceโฆโ โ Hebrews 4:16
There is no barrier too high. No past too dark. No status too low.
If you are in Christ, you are no longer a strangerโyou are a citizen of heaven.
๐ Why Settle for Less?
Why scramble for fleeting power when youโve been offered eternal inheritance?
Why fight to be seen by men when you are known and loved by the King?
โOur citizenship is in heaven.โ โ Philippians 3:20
Earthly governments may change. Passports may expire. But your heavenly citizenship is forever secure in Christ.
