Today is Memorial Day, a federal holiday in the USA dedicated to those who have served and died in their military duties to protect the founding ideals of this country. I had the opportunity to spend time at the Civil War monuments in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania this weekend and reflect on the sacrifice of many who fought to put an end to slavery in this country over 150 years ago, fighting for the belief that all men are in fact created equal under God. More men died in this civil war than in any other war in American history (over 600,000) and the legacy of this national divide unfortunately still haunts us today, as we have all witnessed in the racism that exists to this day. But I thank God for those who fought for justice and continue to do so. It’s because of people who stand up for justice that any progress that has been made in this nation.
