  • October 15: Work as Worship

In the King’s economy, work takes on a new significance—it becomes an act of worship. Unlike the world’s view that work is merely a means to an end, a way to climb the ladder of success, in God’s kingdom, our daily tasks are opportunities to serve Him and others. Colossians 3:23-24 reminds us, “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men…It is the Lord Christ you are serving” (ESV).

As we shift our perspective to view our work through the lens of worship, even the most mundane of tasks take on eternal significance. Whether we’re at our jobs, caring for our families, studying, or volunteering, we can offer our efforts as a pleasing sacrifice to God. By doing our work with excellence and compassion, we reflect Christ to those around us and participate in God’s ongoing renewal of creation.

    Biblical Points:

    1. Serving the Lord in All Things
    – *Romans 12:11 (ESV)*
“Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord.”
    – Our zeal in work should come from our desire to serve the Lord in all we do.

    2. Integrity in Work
    – *Proverbs 10:9 (ESV)*
“Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but he who makes his ways crooked will be found out.”
    – Upholding integrity in our work honors God and builds trust with others.

    3. Humility in Service
    – *Philippians 2:3-4 (ESV)*
“Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves…look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.”
    – In our work, we are called to approach tasks with humility, considering others before ourselves.

    4. Generosity in Sharing
    – *Hebrews 13:16 (ESV)*
“Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.”
    – Our work should include a spirit of generosity, sharing our blessings with others as an act of worship.

    5. Contentment in God’s Provision
    – *1 Timothy 6:6 (ESV)*
“But godliness with contentment is great gain.”
    – Finding contentment in God’s provision frees us from the endless pursuit of wealth and status.

    Discussion Questions:
    1. Why is it important to view our work as a form of worship rather than just a means to an end?
    2. In what ways can you demonstrate integrity and humility in your daily tasks?
    3. How can you cultivate a spirit of generosity and contentment in your work life?

    Memory Verse:
    Colossians 3:23-24 (ESV)
“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men…It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”

    Closing Encouragement:
As you go about your day, remember that your work is an offering to the Lord. Let your tasks be infused with excellence, integrity, and love as you worship through your labor. May your work not only bring glory to God but also be a source of blessing to those around you.
