July 12: Counting the Cost

In a world that often promotes instant gratification and comfort, the call to follow Christ carries a different tone. The Kingdom principle of counting the cost stands in stark contrast to the mindset of ease and self-preservation that the world offers. Jesus himself laid out this principle when He said, “Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple” (Luke 14:27 ESV). Being a disciple of Christ involves sacrifice, perseverance, and a willingness to surrender our own desires for the sake of His kingdom.As we contemplate what it means to count the cost, we are reminded of the rich young ruler who walked away sorrowful because he wasn’t willing to give up his possessions to follow Jesus (Mark 10:17-27). The world tells us to hold tightly to what we have, but Jesus invites us to lay it all down for the sake of His kingdom. Counting the cost involves surrendering our treasures, ambitions, and even our own lives in exchange for the immeasurable worth of knowing Christ and advancing His purposes on earth.
Biblical Points:
1. The Cost of Discipleship
* Scripture: Luke 9:23 (ESV)
* Reflection: Taking up our cross daily means embracing a lifestyle of dying to self and living for Christ, regardless of the personal sacrifice involved.2. The Value of Eternal Treasures
* Scripture: Matthew 6:19-21 (ESV)
* Reflection: By investing in heavenly treasures through our actions and priorities, we store up everlasting rewards beyond material wealth.3. Surrendering All to Follow Christ
* Scripture: Philippians 3:7-8 (ESV)
* Reflection: True gain comes when we count everything as loss compared to the surpassing worth of knowing Christ and being found in Him.4. The Blessings of Obedience
* Scripture: John 14:21 (ESV)
* Reflection: Obedience to Christ’s commands brings the joy of intimacy with Him and the assurance of His presence in our lives.5. Enduring Persecution for Christ’s Sake
* Scripture: 2 Timothy 3:12 (ESV)
* Reflection: Counting the cost may involve facing adversity and persecution for our faith, but in enduring, we participate in Christ’s sufferings and reflect His glory.Discussion Questions:
1. Why is it challenging for us to truly count the cost of following Christ in a world that values comfort and convenience?
2. What are some practical ways we can assess whether we are truly prioritizing God’s kingdom above all else in our daily lives?
3. How can we find joy and peace in the sacrifices required to follow Christ, knowing that the rewards of obedience are eternal?Memory Verse:
Luke 14:27 (ESV)
Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.Closing Encouragement:
As you reflect on the cost of discipleship, take heart in the eternal perspective that guides your choices and priorities. The sacrifices you make for the sake of Christ are not in vain; they are investments in a kingdom that will never fade away. Embrace the challenges with a spirit of surrender and trust, knowing that the joy of knowing Christ and fulfilling His purposes far outweighs any temporary discomfort. Let your life be a testimony to the world of the transformative power of counting the cost and following Jesus wholeheartedly.
