I came across this article via another person’s social media (Instagram) and thought this was so interesting. I’ve always observed many of my married friends and how they do family and life and this article brought to light how ministry in the home, in the church and in society is very much upheld by mothers, making it a matrilineal. And that without mother’s, churches and life at home would not sustain. This article even goes in-depth about the psychological effect of men’s behavior as a result of abusive mothers. There is so much more in this article than I can even explain. I thought it was very interesting and worth the share. Warning: it’s quite long.

American Evangelicalism isn't feminized or patriarchal. It's matrilineal.
Matrilineal societies, such as evangelicalism, are cultures in which women are the primary carriers of social memory and keepers of social order.

Interesting read. I enjoy reading perspectives like this in sociology/psychology. It’s helpful to step back and assess what’s happening in society. I think he made some over-generalizations in his essay, but I definitely get the gist and I have seen this matrilineal trend in America and evangelical churches. The part about “childcare provided” on church program announcements being a signal to mothers – I have seen that for sure! I think churches often feel the need to signal to mothers that they are “here to help” because it’s so often the mother who gets the entire family to church. I’m glad he was clear that he was sticking to the context of American evangelicalism, but I’m curious if it’s similar in other countries? I’m also left wondering what “good” looks like… what does it look like to reflect God’s kingdom as men and women in our homes and in our church communities?

I managed to read the whole thing…lol!
Even the ministry of Jesus was supported, mostly, by women. When He rose from the grave, He showed himself first to women. So, there must be a heavenly bias towards mothers and women. When Josh was much younger, he always wants me but now, it is ‘mama.’ So, I can attest to that. -

Interesting article! Yes women do hold a great responsibility in family, society, and civilization , and I like that this article
distinguished between matriarchal and matrilineal …nice one Feng!
