Merry Christmas! Celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, not his birthday!
One person esteems one day above another; another esteems every day alike. Let each be fully convinced in his own mind. He who observes the day, observes it to the Lord; and he who does not observe the day, to the Lord he does not observe it. Romans 14:5-6a
December 25th of every year is a day set aside by Christians and even non-Christians all over the world to celebrate Christmas which is an event to commemorate the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. There have been many debates by people especially a few denominations who disagree with the celebration because according to them, Jesus was not born on the 25th of December historically and so Christmas should not be celebrated at all on this date. I do agree with the point that our Lord Jesus was probably not born on the 25th of December, however, these good people have not given us His exact date of birth either.
It is an incontrovertible fact that Jesus Christ was born and without the birth of Jesus, it would have been impossible for him to die as a man for the salvation of mankind. His birth is as important as His death, burial, and resurrection. Our faith finds root also in His birth. His birth was so important that God sent Stars and Angels to announce it to the Astrologers and the Shepherd in the fields. It was so important that it was prophesied many years before by Prophet Isaiah ” Behold a virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel” Isaiah 7:14.
God Himself was the first to celebrate Christmas. On a day like 25th December that we have set aside to mark this heavenly event, we remember the joy that filled heaven that holy night which was not actually a silent night but a joyous night of angels praising God saying ” Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace, goodwill toward men!” as witnessed by the Shepherds. How could we not celebrate such a day? This was the fulfillment of God’s dream for man – God dwelling among men.
While each person is at liberty whether to celebrate Christmas or not according to our opening scripture, we must remember that the essence of our faith is love out of a pure heart. Therefore, we do not need to hate each other for celebrating or not celebrating. However, for those of us who choose to celebrate, we are only celebrating the memorial of when God came in the flesh as a man to save mankind from sin once and for all. We celebrate His birth, not His birthday! Merry Christmas to you with love!🎉✨
