” Giving opens doors of increase to your endeavor, which is why God will always give you both seed and bread. Don’t eat your seed.”

What do you guys think about this statement?

Important point to note. If you eat your seed then you have nothing to sow. What is a seed? That’s another question to consider? I am curious what you all think about these two questions.

Important questions especially with the rampant teaching on seedtime and harvest, we may be stuck with the stereotype of a seed being when you bring a certain sum of money to a pastor then believe God for something. This in itself is good but is not also all there is about a seed. I believe a seed is embedded in every activity we undertake in life. The bible says, what a man sows, that will he also reap. So whether as a student, worker, husband, wife, teacher, or whatever role you occupy at a given time, every action is a seed that will generate a result (harvest). When we come to christ, he works in us both to will and to do according to his good pleasure, that way we bear fruits that will plant good seeds every where we go. Do eat your seed in this context would mean, do not withold doing good when you have the opportunity to do so.

@Phil4krist , Yes pastor that is actually what I am looking for.  What is a seed? only tithes, offerings ?

After reading this deep teaching of Pastor @Michael , I feel so happy to discover these insights. Wow, am blessed

In Isaiah 26, the Bible says that Isaac sowed in the land of Gerar and because of that the Lord blessed him until he became wealthy and great. Your seed just like @Michael mentioned is everything you do and all the steps of faith you take towards God’s word and instructions.

When you act on an idea that God is inspiring you with, that is a seed just like Isaac did.
Seed is much more than giving money. It is sowing into your destiny with good decisions, good use of your time and acting on your God-inspired ideas in a timely fashion (which is obedience). All these will produce a bountiful harvest of fruit and the financial seed with which you can bring to the altar as a thanksgiving offering.

There will also be times the Lord will place it in your heart to sow a financial seed in line with His word. If you spend that money on yourself then you have ate your seed. @purposefaith  Nia and I always give the increase on our first paycheck when we get promoted or change to a higher paying job. We do this to honor God for the increase and we make sure we update our tithes and offering as well.

So there is a lot we have to say on this topic and like Nia mentioned we are very passionate about giving the right way. @Jefferson Thanks for bringing this up.

Thanks for sharing this @Jefferson . I still remember the first time I heard this. It was like a lightbulb moment for me. It is a stark reminder that every good thing we have comes from God, including all of his provision. But all of God’s provision isn’t for our consumption. Some of it is, but some is actually meant for further investment.

Just because we have money in our bank account, doesn’t mean it’s only to meet our own needs or wants. Just because we get a pay increase at work, doesn’t mean we can automatically put the increase toward our carnal desires. Even if those things seem “right” or justified in our own eyes.

Financial decisions require discernment (all decisions, really!). And discernment comes by the Spirit of God. I believe the Holy Spirit that helps us discern what is seed versus what is bread. But we also have to prepare our hearts and minds to receive His wisdom and instruction.

We are responsible for being wise with our finances, and being honest with ourselves about what we actually need (basic necessities) versus what is a luxury. A sober perspective and consistent, honest review of our finances will help us to keep our flesh at bay, and remind us that we already have more than we need. And it opens us up to hear the Holy Spirit and how He might instruct us to give. Or He may convict us of poor spending habits, and ask us to correct our behavior. But we have to be ready and actively listening for guidance in this area.

The danger of eating your seed is that you think you’re helping yourself, maybe by buying something new and fancy, but you are actually penalizing yourself. That’s the deception of the enemy. If you choose not to invest in the way that God desires, you will never see the increase from that investment – you won’t see the blessing in someone else’s life, ministry, business venture, etc. or the harvest that you would reap in your own.

There’s so many Scriptures coming to mind, so I will just list them here:
          Romans 8:5-14
          1 John 3:17
          Gal 5:13-14
          Phil 2:3-4
          Prov 14:12
          Luke 6:38
          2 Cor 9:6-7

Phew, I have a lot of passion around this! Didn’t expect to type this long lol Maybe I need to do some research and prepare an entire sermon! But here are my closing thoughts:

The world’s economy is about spending. God’s economy is about giving. So it’s only right that when He gives to us, He expects us to give in return. And when we give, He multiplies it back! It’s like He just can’t stop Himself from being generous! And that’s the God we are meant to emulate.

When we become strictly consumers without giving of our resources (donating to those in need, investing in others or in godly ideas, supporting ministries, etc), we head down a dangerous path. In nature, that’s how water bodies become stagnant and polluted. In the church, that’s how people become puffed up with knowledge but ineffective in ministering to others. Giving is critical to a productive life.

Powerful! Lord help me to know which one is my seed, and which one is for bread; that i may not eat my seed in Jesus name.

i must harvest in due season amen
