Work as Worship – Redefining Career Through a Kingdom Lens
Introduction
For many, “worship” means singing in church or lifting hands during prayer. Yet Scripture paints a wider picture: worship is the offering of our entire lives to God—including our work. Paul reminds us, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord” (Col. 3:23). When you reframe your career, studies, or business as worship, even routine tasks become sacred acts.
Think of the artist who signs every painting with their name. In the same way, when you dedicate your daily work to God, it bears His signature. The world may see an ordinary job, but heaven sees an offering of excellence and faith. Your work is your signature endorsed in the hearts of those you meet.
Biblical Foundation
- “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” (1 Corinthians 10:31)
- “Therefore, I urge you… offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.” (Romans 12:1)
Brother Lawrence, a 17th-century monk, worked in a monastery kitchen. Though his job was menial—washing pots, peeling vegetables—he became known for the joy and presence of God he carried. He described it as “practicing the presence of God,” proving that a kitchen can be just as holy as a cathedral when work is offered in worship.
Practical Application
- Begin each workday with prayer: “Lord, I dedicate this task to You.”
- Strive for excellence, not to impress people, but to honour God.
- Treat colleagues and clients as people made in God’s image irrespective of their background, not just as transactions.
Growth Challenge
- Work & Worship Journal – Choose one task this week (big or small). Before starting, pause to dedicate it to God. After completing it, write a short reflection on how it felt different when seen as worship.
Interactive Discussion Prompt
- What is one daily task you often view as “mundane” that could become worship if you reframed it?
- How might your workplace culture change if everyone saw work as worship?
