Influencing the Seven Mountains of Culture – A Biblical Mandate
Introduction
Every society is shaped by key spheres of influence: family, religion, education, media, arts & entertainment, business/economy, and government/politics. These “mountains” determine how people think, what values they hold, and how they live.
For too long, believers have seen church as the only sphere of Kingdom expression. But God’s mandate is broader: “The kingdoms of this world will become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ” (Revelation 11:15). Kingdom pioneers are called to bring Christ’s values into every mountain, not by domination, but by service, excellence, and redemptive influence.
Biblical Foundation
- “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.” (Matthew 5:14)
- “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it.” (Psalm 24:1)
- “The kingdoms of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord.” (Revelation 11:15)
Daniel influencing Babylon (Daniel 1, 6), Joseph shaping Egypt’s economy (Genesis 41), and Esther shaping Persian politics (Esther 4:14) all show that God positions His people at the highest levels of culture.
Biblical Examples:
Daniel became an advisor to kings in Babylon, influencing law and policy while remaining faithful to God. His presence in government preserved a generation of Jews and displayed Yahweh’s power to pagan nations.
Esther rose from obscurity to become queen in Persia. By wisely using her influence, she preserved her people from genocide. Her story reminds us that sometimes Kingdom influence is about courage, timing, and speaking up in high-stakes environments (“For such a time as this…” Esther 4:14).
Contemporary Examples:
In South Korea, after the Korean War, Christian leaders invested heavily in education and business guided by biblical values. Decades later, South Korea has one of the largest Christian populations in Asia and global cultural influence (e.g., Samsung, Hyundai, Pastor Paul Yongi Cho had one of the largest ministries with global impact). This shows how shaping multiple “mountains” transforms nations.
Dr. Ben Carson, world-renowned neurosurgeon, applied Kingdom values of diligence, humility, and integrity throughout his medical career. He became the first surgeon to successfully separate conjoined twins at the head and consistently spoke about faith guiding his decisions. His influence in medicine showed how biblical values of compassion, excellence, and perseverance can shape entire industries.
Practical Application
- Identify your “mountain” — where God has placed you (business, education, arts, government, etc.).
- Study its culture, language, and values so you can engage effectively.
- Enter with excellence and service, not pride or superiority.
- Look for Kingdom entry points: integrity in business, creativity in arts, compassion in politics, truth in media.
- Like Esther, be willing to speak when silence would compromise Kingdom values.
Interactive Reflection Prompt
- Which of the seven mountains do you feel most called to influence? Can you name one person who is modelling Christian values in this area?
- What risks or sacrifices might God be asking you to make, like Esther, to fulfill that call?
- Mountain Mapping Exercise – Choose one “mountain” (education, media, business, etc.). Create a one-page map of:
- Current cultural trends in that mountain.
- The Kingdom values that could redeem it.
- One practical way you can begin to influence it where you are.
