Christian Think Tanks & Policy Influence
Introduction
Culture is not only shaped by business or media — it is also shaped by laws, policies, and public discourse. Decisions made in government chambers affect generations. If believers withdraw from this space, others will set the agenda. Decisions are made by those who sit at the table.
Christian think tanks — groups dedicated to research, thought leadership, and policy recommendations — play a vital role in ensuring biblical values have a voice in society. Policy influence is not about imposing religion but about bringing Kingdom wisdom, justice, and compassion into the public square.
Biblical Foundation
- “Seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.” (Jeremiah 29:7)
- “When the righteous thrive, the people rejoice; when the wicked rule, the people groan.” (Proverbs 29:2)
- Joseph advising Pharaoh (Genesis 41:33–40) — a think-tank role before kings.
- Daniel in Babylon (Daniel 2:46–49) — a trusted policy advisor, respected for wisdom and integrity.
Biblical Example: Joseph’s policy for Egypt during famine — a combination of economic foresight and crisis management — saved nations. His wisdom wasn’t just spiritual; it was practical governance.
Contemporary Example: The Jubilee Centre in the UK is a Christian think tank that integrates biblical values into public policy research on economics, family, and justice. Similarly, Acton Institute (USA) blends Christian theology with free-market economics to influence thought leaders globally.
The Barna Research Institute provides data-driven insights into faith and culture, helping leaders craft strategies for evangelism, discipleship, and cultural engagement. For example, their studies on Gen Z faith trends have influenced both church strategy and Christian organizations’ advocacy in education and media.
Practice Points
- Stay informed: Read widely and understand how policies affect society.
- Develop thought leadership: Write, research, and speak into areas you’re passionate about.
- Build alliances: Work with organizations already shaping policy.
- Serve with integrity: Influence comes from credibility and trust.
- Don’t just critique — propose solutions rooted in justice, wisdom, and compassion.
Growth Challenge: Policy Influence Brief
Choose one societal issue (e.g., affordable housing, digital ethics, family stability). Write a 1-page policy brief that outlines:
- The Problem.
- The Biblical/Kingdom perspective.
- A Practical Recommendation.
Share your brief with the group for discussion.
Interactive Reflection Prompt
- If you could influence one area of national policy (education, healthcare, justice, etc.), what would it be?
- How can you start contributing ideas, research, or advocacy in that area now?
