What Does It Mean To Be Born Again?
Being “born again” often describes the new birth in Christ. The term was used once in the Bible, in John 3:3, when Jesus spoke to Nicodemus, a Jewish religious leader: “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the Kingdom of God.” This was not just a religious term for Jesus; it was a factual statement. Nicodemus responded, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born again?” Jesus was speaking of a new birth, distinct from our physical birth.
Our first birth is the human birth, clothing us in a body that can die. According to the scriptures, life does not end when the body dies, indicating the existence of a spiritual man who is our true self. The new birth refers to this spirit man, who needs to be born anew and recreated in God’s image and Kingdom. Although the term “born again” is mentioned only once, the Bible uses various synonyms to describe this concept: new creation, recreated, new birth, the new man, saved, or believer.
2 Corinthians 5:17 says, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” Being born again is not just a religious term; it signifies being renewed inwardly into God’s family. This transformation is a profound and life-changing experience, opening the door to a new existence in Christ. Embrace this new birth and step into the fullness of life that God has prepared for you.
Romans 10:9 clearly describes the process: ” If you declare with your mouth, ‘ Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”
