The Man-fisher Part 2: The Call to Change the World through Christian Leadership
Last week we began the discussion on God’s call to everyone of us to lead in all spheres of Life. Today we will look at the fact that true leadership actually begins with you.
From our key scripture in Matthew 4:9, we see that our Lord Jesus did not call the disciples to send them out immediately but the first instruction was for them to follow him and He would make them fisher’s of men. This is instructive because some leaders may think they know it all or already have the necessary qualifications. However, leadership as the believer is different because we represent the kingdom of God with its concept and culture. We can only lead to the extent of our vision (foresight, insight and even hindsight). Christian leaders should be flag bearers of God’s virtues.
Our primary call in leadership is to follow Christ being transformed through His pattern. God instructed Moses to build according to the heavenly pattern (Exodus 25:9). We do not fight aimlessly, there are rules to win the prize. However we can only discover this purpose in the place of personal and private devotion to God.
Sometimes we find that the pressure of leadership lures us away from our primary call which is a devotion to God and his word. The disciples had to choose deacons to allow them more time with God. We could get very busy with the service that we forget the master. We could think we already know how to do it until we fail. This can be exemplified by Moses who probably grew up hearing he would deliver Israel, but started out wrongly trying to do this with his physical strength. Little wonder, he could understand the importance of building to the pattern later on. David also made a mistake when he took a census of the Israelites and brought judgement upon himself and the Israel.
God has a purpose, pattern and plan for us and it is not enough to be a leader but we need to know the reason God put us there which is to represent and build according to the kingdom Pattern. We do not adopt the leadership systems of the world but our concept must come from God’s Kingdom. Jesus explained same to his disciples in Mark 10:42-45.
Great leaders like Moses and our Lord Jesus, began and ended with God’s map. They always spent time alone with God, away from the distractions. Its not surprising why they had the greatest impact.
It’s our time to carry the flag in whatever sphere we find ourselves and lead from God’s perspective.
