    Key Scriptures

    Matthew 28:18–20; Mark 16:15; Acts 1:8

    Introduction

When Jesus was about to ascend into heaven, He didn’t give His disciples a complex theological lecture. He gave them marching orders:

“Go and make disciples of all nations…” – Matthew 28:19

It was a mission statement simple enough for fishermen to understand, yet powerful enough to change the course of history.

But for many believers today, “The Great Commission” feels distant — something for missionaries in far-off countries. The truth is, Jesus intended it for all of us. The Great Commission is not about a location, it’s about a lifestyle.

    Biblical Foundation

    • Matthew 28:18–20 – The call to “go,” “make disciples,” “baptize,” and “teach.”
    • Mark 16:15 – “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.”
    • Acts 1:8 – The Holy Spirit empowers us to be witnesses “in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

    Kingdom Principles

    • It’s about making disciples, not just converts.
    • Evangelism introduces people to Jesus; discipleship helps them grow to be like Him. The Great Commission includes both.
    • Your “world” starts where you are.
    • “All nations” includes your street, your workplace, your family gatherings, and your online spaces.
    • It’s Spirit-powered, not self-powered.
    • Jesus promised the Holy Spirit’s presence and power — you’re not called to do this in your own strength.

Breaking It Down in Simple Terms

    • Go – Live intentionally. Look for opportunities to engage people where they are.
    • Make disciples – Help people follow Jesus step by step, not just pray a prayer.
    • Baptize – Lead them into public identification with Christ.
    • Teach – Pass on God’s truth so they can live it out.

    Living the Great Commission

    1. Start with one person – Pray daily for one person who doesn’t know Christ and look for natural ways to share.
    2. Share over coffee – Conversations can be as powerful as sermons.
    3. Use your skills – Are you good at cooking? Host a meal. Good at fixing things? Offer help and let relationship grow.
    4. Invite, don’t impose – Extend invitations to church, Bible study, or online resources without forcing.
    5. Mentor a new believer – Offer to meet regularly for prayer, Bible study, or encouragement.

    Common Misunderstandings

    • “It’s just for leaders or evangelists.” – No, Jesus’ command was to all disciples.
    • “I’m not ready yet.” – Growth is ongoing; you can share what you know now.
    • “It means overseas missions only.” – It starts right where you are.

In a local coffee shop, a young woman often saw an elderly man sitting alone. One day she introduced herself, learned his wife had passed away, and began visiting him weekly. Months later, he attended church with her and came to faith. She never planned a “mission trip” — she just lived on mission.

    Growth Challenge: “This Week’s Mission”

    • Write down the name of one person in your life who doesn’t know Christ.
    • Pray for them daily and look for one natural opportunity to share your faith or invite them into a conversation about Jesus.

    Interactive Discussion Prompt

    • If Jesus personally gave you the Great Commission today, how would you phrase it in your own words for your life right now? Share it with others for feedback.
