Obedience in the Small
The journey to spiritual maturity is often marked by our willingness to obey in the smallest of tasks. This principle stands in stark contrast to the world’s constant pursuit of grandeur and recognition. The world teaches us that power is in big, bold moves, while the Kingdom of God reveals its strength in the humble acts of obedience. Exodus 7:19–20 shows us a profound example: Moses, standing by the Nile, obeys God’s command to stretch out his hand. In this small act, the mighty river of Egypt turns to blood, displaying God’s supremacy over Pharaoh’s supposed control. In the grand narrative of liberation, God shows that genuine transformation and authority stem from faithfully executing His commands, no matter how insignificant they seem. Moses’ repeated obedience reveals that the true battle isn’t just against external powers like Pharaoh, but against internal illusions of sovereignty embedded in the human heart. Like Moses, we are invited to take our figurative “staff” and water the seeds of God’s Kingdom through faithful, albeit small acts of obedience.
By this, we participate in God’s work, confronting both oppressive regimes and personal strongholds. As we yield to His direction in the seemingly inconsequential parts of our day, we open our lives to see His power made manifest. Even amidst the streams of our daily routine, God transforms and redeems through our simple, steadfast obedience.
