May 15: Focus on Jesus
When life feels like a storm and you’re tossed on turbulent seas, remember this kingdom truth: focus determines faith. In our everyday world, it is common to fixate on what’s visible—our troubles, pressures, and worries. Yet, the kingdom calls us to gaze beyond the seen and set our eyes firmly on the unseen Author and Perfecter of faith, Jesus Christ, as Hebrews 12:2 commands. Peter’s bold step onto the waters reminds us that miracles begin on the Word of Christ. When Jesus said, “Come,” Peter walked on the impossible, demonstrating that divine focus enables divine enablement. Our challenge is not the storm itself but where our attention dwells. In Matthew 14:29-31, Peter’s faith faltered only when he shifted his gaze from Jesus to the wind and waves surrounding him. By keeping our eyes on Jesus, we’re anchored, even when winds blow fiercely around us. Focus on Jesus, the faithful Shepherd, cultivates spiritual maturity and dependence, turning chaos into peace. It’s in this humility and wholehearted trust that we’re transformed, grounded in the truth that storms cannot overcome those whose eyes are fixed on Jesus.
Biblical Points:
1. The Author and Finisher of Faith
“Looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.” — Hebrews 12:2 (ESV)
Jesus not only initiates our faith journey but also refines and completes it. By focusing on Him, we align ourselves with His victorious path, turning challenges into stepping stones for spiritual growth.2. Steps Begin on His Word
“He said, ‘Come.’ So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus.” — Matthew 14:29 (ESV)
Our faith isn’t a leap into the unknown but a response to Christ’s invitation. Like Peter, stepping onto His Word empowers us to navigate life’s impossibilities with confidence rooted in God’s promises.3. The Strength of Steadfast Sight
“You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.” — Isaiah 26:3 (ESV)
Fixing our sight on God stabilizes our heart in tumultuous times, instilling a peace that surpasses understanding as we trust His unwavering presence.4. Transcending Circumstances
“Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.” — Colossians 3:2 (ESV)
By elevating our perspective to eternal realities, earthly troubles take their rightful size. This mindset shift ensures our hearts are buoyed above discouragement and despair.5. Peace in His Presence
“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.” — Psalm 56:3 (ESV)
Trust shifts our focus from fear to faith, reminding us that in Christ’s presence, fear loses its grip and the chaos around us is quieted by our confidence in Him.Discussion Questions:
1. Why do you think it is challenging to keep your focus on Jesus during difficult times?
2. What specific promises or Words from Jesus has God spoken to you that you can stand on, much like Peter stepping onto the water?
3. How can aligning your thoughts with Jesus through everyday practices help maintain peace amidst life’s storms?Memory Verse:
“Looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.” — Hebrews 12:2 (ESV)Closing Encouragement:
May your heart find peace and your spirit strength as you direct your eyes toward Jesus, the One who calms every storm. Remember, greatness in God’s kingdom is not found in self-reliance but in humble dependence on the One who walked on water and invites you to do the same through faith. Through eyes fixed on the eternal, your present challenges become pathways to knowing Him more deeply. Stand firm and steadfast, as He is faithful to complete the good work He began in you.
