  • Leadership Redefined: Influence That Looks Like Jesus

    Key Scripture:

“Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant.”
    Matthew 20:26 (NLT)

    Introduction: Why Redefine Leadership?

In today’s world, leadership is often equated with position, power, charisma, and control. From boardrooms to pulpits, influence is measured by followers, applause, and metrics. But when Jesus stepped onto the stage of history, He flipped the leadership paradigm upside down.

Jesus redefined leadership—not as a pursuit of power but a posture of servanthood. His model was not top-down dominance, but bottom-up empowerment. His greatest triumph was not in conquering cities, but in conquering hearts—by washing feet, healing the broken, and dying for others.

In this lesson, you’ll discover that real leadership in the Kingdom is not about climbing a ladder; it’s about laying your life down.

What Does Leadership in the Kingdom Look Like?

    1. Leadership Begins with Love, Not Ego

“Having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.” – John 13:1

Jesus’ motivation wasn’t ambition—it was compassion. True leadership flows from the love of Christ in us, not a need to be needed.

    2. Leadership Is Service, Not Status

“I am among you as one who serves.” – Luke 22:27

In John 13, Jesus washed His disciples’ feet—an act reserved for the lowest household servant. He was the Son of God with the highest authority, yet He took the lowest position to model servant-leadership.

    3. Leadership Is Influence, Not Control

Jesus never manipulated or coerced. He invited, challenged, empowered, and released.
Leadership in the Kingdom is not about having all the answers; it’s about raising others to walk in their calling.

    Contrast: Worldly vs. Kingdom Leadership

    1. Power over people vs Power to lift people
    2. Focus on Title and position vs Identity in Christ
    3. Driven by ambition vs Driven by purpose and love
    4. Command-and-control vs Inspire-and-serve
    5. Measured by success vs Measured by faithfulness

    Practical Applications

    1. Identify someone you can serve this week.
Start with small acts—carry their burden, pray with them, or encourage them.
    2. Choose influence over image.
Ask: How can I raise others up instead of drawing attention to myself?
    3. Review your motive.
Why do you want to lead? Is it to be seen, or to be used by God for others’ good?

Conclusion: Lead Like the Lamb, Not Just the Lion

Jesus is the Lion of Judah, but He led like the Lamb who was slain. In the Kingdom, greatness begins with humility, and leadership begins with love. If you want to rise high, start by going low. Because in God’s eyes, the towel carries more weight than the title.

      Challenge

      “The Towel & Basin” Challenge:
Find a creative way to serve someone who least expects it—like Jesus did. Share your experience in the group forum.

      Scripture Memory:

“Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant.” – Matthew 20:26

      Reflective Discussion Prompts

      • Think about a time you felt truly led, not bossed. Share your experience.
      • Who in your life has influenced you by their humility, faith, or servant-heart?
      • Are there places in your leadership today where you’ve prioritized control over compassion?

Share your thoughts, let’s learn together.
