“You are permitted to understand the secrets of the Kingdom of Heaven, but others are not. – Matthew 13:11 (NLT)

Starting at age 30, Jesus spent about 3 years preaching and announcing the Good News about the Kingdom of God. As described in Matthew 13, Jesus went on his second ministry tour making stops in and around Galilee. There were people who also traveled on tour with him: his disciples, women who had been healed of evil spirits, and others who contributed their resources to support him and his disciples. When Jesus spoke to the large crowds, he always spoke in parables. However, to those with him, he would interpret the parables, and affirmed that they are permitted to understand the secrets of the Kingdom of God while many others are not.

Consider a popular musician on tour today. A huge crowd will show up for their concert, but it’s the small entourage and staff that they travel with who actually know them intimately off-stage – their personality and quirks, their likes and dislikes, their plans, their needs. In the time of Jesus’ ministry, many people arrived for a “show” and to perhaps see what all the hype was about. But when they looked at Jesus, they didn’t really see the true essence of who he is, and when they heard him, they heard parables without understanding the interpretation. On the other hand, those who were closest to him had an “all access pass” to the truth.

As we consider our relationship with God, we must remember that we have an all access pass. We are not merely spectators of who God is and what He can do. I believe God wants to remind us that He is looking for people who want to go “on tour” with him, get “behind the scenes”, co-labor with him, not just be a spectator. By the power of the Holy Spirit, we are invited to understand the secrets of the Kingdom of Heaven.

When you consider your personal walk with God, what does it look like to be “on tour” with Him with an all access pass?
