That you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ Philippians 1:10

Then this Daniel distinguished himself above the governors and satraps, because an excellent spirit was in him and the king gave thought of setting him over the whole realm. Daniel 6:3

We currently live in a rapidly changing and fast paced world with myriads of new innovations being churned out on daily basis. Things that hitherto, took years to achieve are now possible in a matter of minutes, days or few months. This fulfills the prophecy in Daniel 12:4 that knowledge will increase in these last days. It also stated in same prophecy that those who know their God will be strong and do exceeding exploits (Dan.11:32). We therefore, have the opportunity to reach the world for Jesus through our excellent earthly products.

There are a few subtle misconceptions among believers who think that they will eventually succeed “by the grace of God”. Some think that successful people were created with some special endowments, gifts or talents. Some think they can get it by prayer, fasting or giving financial seeds/tithes/offerings to a man of God or local assembly. While these are good things but they do not produce sustainable excellence. Excellence is a spirit: an attitude with specific system settings evidenced by reproducible results. Anyone who is properly attuned to this frequency finds him/herself consistently producing excellent results effortlessly. These people are programmed to always see beyond the ordinary or the normal. They have gone from just the good to coveting the best things (1 Corinthians 12:31).

When we received Jesus Christ, we were born into the Kingdom of God. This Kingdom is a Kingdom of excellence – an epitome of perfection. The Holy Spirit produces that force that works in us to will and to do excellent things which brings God pleasure. So every believer comes factory-fitted with an excellent spirit. However, God also gave us a soul which is the window through which our human spirits relate with this earthly world. This means the level of influence our spirit has on this natural realm is dependent on the amount of light we allow through the window of our soul. This light refers to Knowledge.

How do we shine the light into our soul? By meditating on the Word of God and by staying abreast of the facts of life around us. This sharpens our spirits to approve only excellent things. Refuse to cut corners, take the easy way out, or to be just that average person in your business, job, academics, family, ministry, relationships etc. Make a choice to go the extra mile, add that special touch, and look to make a difference- to distinguish yourself, not out of competition with any body, but because that is your make-up – It is who you are. Let your light shine so excellently that people will see your excellence and glorify your Heavenly Father like Daniel did.

Wonderful thoughts you shared here @michael just as the apostle Paul wrote to Timothy that we have not received the Spirit of fear but of power, love and a sound mind (2 Tim. 1:7). As kingdom citizens, we are to bear the world up and lead in the frontiers of innovation through the excellent Spirit we have received from God. Success is not chance, it is a product of consistent application of one’s self to his purpose, passion and vision from God.

Always propose excellent things and be honest, and leave the event to God. Paul puts it this way in 1 cor. 3:6-8, I, Paul, planted, Apollos wanted but God gave the increase. Someone has to plant and the planted seed or idea must be cared for and watered and then God provides the increase. So, do what you must, follow godly principles as well the natural laws of success and increase but in the end, trust on God for the increase.

Thank you Pst Phil. Quite inspiring to know. Success is not by chance, consistency is key. We do our part and God will always be faithful to bless the work of our hands.

Q: How to distinguish between excellence and perfection?

Thank you Minkee for the good question. I would say that the difference is quite subtle. Excellence is not necessarily about being perfect but an attitude or disposition to achieve the best out of whatever you are given to do. Perfection on the other hand refers to a state of completeness or which no further improvement is possible. An excellent person is not one who is perfect but one who is constantly improving on his/herself to be the best version of his/herself.
