Dashboard Forums Questions New Believers Frequently Ask Is There Only One God?

    The Clear Witness of Scripture

The Bible leaves no room for confusion on this question: there is only one God. This truth is central to our Christian faith and is repeated throughout Scripture.

In the Old Testament, God revealed Himself to Israel in these words:

“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one!” (Deuteronomy 6:4)

This verse, known as the Shema, was (and still is) recited daily by devout Jews. It set Israel apart in a world filled with nations that worshiped many gods and idols. Israel was called to know and serve the one true God.

The New Testament echoes this same truth. Paul wrote:

“Yet for us there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things and we for Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we live.” (1 Corinthians 8:6)

Notice how Paul makes it clear: for us who believe, God is not one among many, but the only One—the Creator of all things, the source of life, and the reason for our existence.

Faith Built on the One True God

This conviction has always been foundational for Christians. As Kenneth Hagin often emphasised, ” Faith begins where the will of God is known—and we must begin by knowing who God is.” E.W. Kenyon also taught that true faith is not in “a god” but in the God, the living Father who revealed Himself in Christ Jesus.

The Trinity: One God, Three Persons

Some people question: if we speak of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, does that mean we worship three gods? Not at all.

The Bible shows us that God is one in essence but revealed in three persons—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This is the beautiful mystery of the Trinity—not three gods but one God expressed in perfect unity.

We see glimpses of this even in the Old Testament. In Genesis, God said:

“Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness” (Genesis 1:26). Here, the Father, the Word, and the Spirit are revealed together.

Unlike human analogies, which often fall short, the Bible reveals the three persons of the Godhead acting simultaneously. At Jesus’ baptism, the Son was baptised, the Spirit descended like a dove, and the Father spoke from heaven (Matthew 3:16-17). All three were present and active together, showing that God does not switch “modes”—He eternally exists as three persons in one divine essence.

    Trusting the Mystery

No human illustration can fully explain this mystery. Water, eggs, or the sun are often used as examples, but they fail to capture God’s eternal unity and relational nature. Sometimes the best “analogy” is simply the Bible’s own language:

“The Lord our God, the Lord is one” (Deuteronomy 6:4)

“Go therefore and make disciples… baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19)

We don’t have to fully explain God to trust Him—we simply receive His revelation with faith.

    Our Confession of Faith

As Christians, we do not waver in our confession: there is only one God, and He alone is worthy of our worship. All other “gods” are either man-made idols or demonic imitations.

Paul acknowledged that in the world there are “many ‘gods’ and many ‘lords’—yet for us, there is one God” (1 Corinthians 8:5–6).

    Summary

    • The Bible teaches clearly: there is only one God.
    • Deuteronomy 6:4 and 1 Corinthians 8:6 anchor this truth.
    • God is one in essence but revealed in three distinct persons—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
    • As believers, we worship Him alone, the Creator and source of all things.
