  • Growing Strong: Faith Supplements for Every Believer

Posted by Pastoral Care on July 27, 2025 at 9:30 pm

Your faith in Jesus is the foundation of your new life. But just like a seed needs water, light, and nutrients to grow, your faith needs spiritual supplements to become strong, fruitful, and effective.

In 2 Peter 1:5-7, the Apostle Peter provides a growth plan. These are not religious checklists—they are spiritual nutrients that shape you into the person God created you to be.

“Make every effort to respond to God’s promises. Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love for everyone.” — 2 Peter 1:5–7, NLT

Peter is talking to believers—people who already have saving faith in Jesus. But he’s urging them (and us) not to stop at salvation.

Imagine you’ve just enrolled in a gym. That’s great! But if you never show up or eat right, you won’t grow stronger. Faith is the starting point, not the finish line. Just like your body needs supplements to grow strong and healthy, your faith needs spiritual nutrients to grow mature and fruitful.

“For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith…”
    2 Peter 1:5, NIV

Seven Supplements to Add to Your Faith

    1. Moral Excellence (Virtue) – Doing What’s Right

A passion for integrity and doing the right thing, even when it’s hard.

    • Faith isn’t just belief—it’s
transformation. This is the first sign of true change
    • Integrity in your thoughts, words, and
      actions
    • Reflecting the character of Christ in
      daily choices

    2. Knowledge – Knowing God and His Ways

Growing in understanding of God’s Word, His will, and spiritual truth.

    · We don’t grow by emotion alone—we grow by revelation and understanding.

    • Read the Bible daily (start with John or Genesis)
    • Learn who God is and what He desires for
      your life

    3. Self-Control – Mastering Desires

Discipline over impulses—whether it’s anger, lust, appetite, or laziness.

    · Without self-control, your gifting and knowledge can collapse under pressure.

    · Master your emotions and appetites.

    · Say no to what pulls you away from God

    · Practice discipline in speech, actions, and priorities

    4. Patient Endurance (Perseverance) – Staying Steady in Trials

Not quitting when life gets hard, trusting God through the process.

Spiritual strength is not proven in excitement—but in endurance.

    · Don’t quit in trials—grow through them

    · Trust God’s timing and hold your peace

    5. Godliness – Living With God-Awareness

Reverence, honour, and alignment with God’s character in all areas of life.

Godliness is not perfection—it’s priority: putting God at the center.

    · Live aware of God’s presence.

    • Align your lifestyle with God’s values
    • Let reverence guide your conduct

    6. Brotherly Affection (Philadelphia) – Love for Fellow Believers

Genuine kindness, loyalty, and support for your spiritual family.

We grow best in community, not isolation.

    · Love your spiritual family.

    • Be kind, supportive, and loyal to other
      believers
    • Share life together through fellowship

    7. Love (Agape) – Unconditional, Sacrificial Love

Loving people the way God does—beyond feelings, status, or merit.

Love is the highest expression of a mature believer.

    · Show sacrificial, unconditional love.

    • Go beyond comfort or convenience
    • Treat everyone the way Christ treats you

What Happens When You Do This?

“If you do these things, you will never fall… and your life will be productive and effective.” — 2 Peter 1:8–10, paraphrased

    Without These Supplements:

    • Faith remains shallow
    • Growth becomes stagnant
    • We risk becoming unfruitful and
      spiritually blind

    With Them:

    • We become strong, rooted, discerning, and
      full of grace

Conclusion: Faith is the Seed—These Are the Vitamins

Imagine planting a seed (faith in Jesus). That seed is alive, but if you don’t water it, feed it, and expose it to light, it won’t grow.

    • The Word is water
    • The Spirit is the sunlight
    • These qualities are the daily supplements

They don’t earn your salvation—they strengthen your salvation so you can live with purpose and power.

    Track Your Growth

Use this as a spiritual habit tracker. Each week, reflect:

    • Am I growing in self-control?
    • Am I showing more patience or love?
    • How is my understanding of God deepening?

    Final Encouragement

Faith is the seed. These traits are the vitamins. The Holy Spirit is your Helper. You’re not alone, and you’re not expected to be perfect—just consistent.

“He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion.” — Philippians 1:6

    You were made to grow.
    You were made to shine.
Keep going—you’re becoming who you truly are in Christ.
