Discussion 7: What Uncomfortable Truth About Yourself Have You Been Avoiding?
Theme: Honesty & Growth
Scripture anchor: Psalm 139:23–24
Opening
Growth requires honesty, but honesty can be uncomfortable. Sometimes we know a habit is unhealthy, our finances are disorganized, our attitude is becoming bitter, or we are using excuses to avoid responsibility. It is easier to blame circumstances than examine our own contribution. This question is an invitation to replace avoidance with truth and then choose a constructive next step.
Real-Life Scenario
A person complains that nobody gives them opportunities, but they repeatedly arrive late, fail to follow through and avoid feedback. Their frustration is real, but so is their responsibility. What would honest self-examination require?
Let’s Talk
· Why do people resist truths that could help them?
· What is the difference between self-examination and destructive self-criticism?
· How can feedback reveal something we cannot see ourselves?
· What excuses are easiest to believe about our own behavior?
· Who has earned enough trust to speak honestly into your life?
· What truth, if accepted, could help you make a better decision?
Biblical Perspective
Psalm 139:23–24 models a prayer asking God to search and reveal what the person cannot see clearly. Self-examination can therefore become a pathway to wisdom and correction.
Action 7
Take one responsibility step: apologize, organize, ask for feedback, finish a delayed task, change a boundary or seek help.
Closing Thought
Honesty is not the enemy of growth; avoidance is.
