February 28: Carrying the Bones of Promise

In Exodus 13:19, we find a peculiar yet profound moment where Moses takes the bones of Joseph with him as the Israelites head into the wilderness. This act was a fulfillment of an ancient promise Joseph had made to his brothers, that God would surely come to their aid and bring them to the land He had promised Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. In the world’s eyes, carrying a dead man’s bones might seem absurd, yet these bones were a tangible reminder of God’s faithfulness and the certainty of His promises.Worldly logic often emphasizes efficiency and instantaneous fulfillment, but God’s kingdom operates with a different lens. The Israelites’ journey wasn’t the shortest route, but God’s chosen path was the wisest, serving as a reminder that God’s deliverance is tied to His timing and method. Joshua wasn’t just carrying bones; he was bearing witness to a fulfilled promise—a promise that would anchor the faith of all who beheld them.
Much like the Israelites carried Joseph’s bones, God calls us to carry His promises with us. These promises, deeply rooted in Scripture, act as guides in our own wilderness experiences. When faced with detours and delays, we are reminded that God’s guidance considers our entire journey—not just our desired destination—leading us to depend more on His eternal wisdom.
Biblical Points:
Faithful Fulfillment
Scripture: “By faith Joseph, when his end was near, spoke about the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt and gave instructions concerning the burial of his bones.” — Hebrews 11:22 (NIV)
Reflection: Joseph’s faith in God’s promise was so strong that he gave instructions for something that seemed improbable—an exodus after his death. This demonstrates that God’s promises are unfailing. We too are called to live by faith, trusting God will fulfill His word in His perfect timing.Direction with Purpose
Scripture: “Then the LORD said to Moses, ‘Tell the Israelites to turn back and encamp near Pi Hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea. They are to encamp by the sea, directly opposite Baal Zephon.'” — Exodus 14:1-2 (NIV)
Reflection: God’s instructions may seem circuitous, yet they are strategically designed for our ultimate good. By leading the Israelites in a seemingly roundabout way, God set the stage for His greatest acts of deliverance, inviting us to trust His sovereign direction in our own lives.Heritage of Promise
Scripture: “The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.” — Acts 2:39 (NIV)
Reflection: God’s promises are not just historical artifacts; they are living legacies. As we embrace His promises, we carry them forward as a testament to His continued faithfulness. Our lives become a journey of hope for future generations.Reflection Questions:
1. Why do you think God sometimes leads us on routes that are not the most direct?
2. What promises from God are you currently carrying, and how do they shape your journey?
3. How can you practice reliance on God’s wisdom rather than your own understanding in your current circumstances?Memory Verse:
“Then Moses took the bones of Joseph with him, for Joseph had made the sons of Israel solemnly swear, saying, ‘God will surely visit you, and you shall carry up my bones with you from here.'” — Exodus 13:19 (ESV)
Closing Encouragement and Prayer:
Be encouraged that the path God has set before you, though perhaps winding and uncertain, is laden with purpose. Trust in His wisdom, knowing that greatness flows through humility and complete dependence on Him. Eternal treasures await as you keep step with His promises.
Heavenly Father, guide us in carrying Your promises with unwavering faith. May we place our trust in Your perfect direction, finding strength and courage in the assurance of Your everlasting faithfulness. Amen.
