  • January 22: Receiving Before Reigning

In the upside-down kingdom of God, true reigning comes not through grasping power but through humbly receiving His grace. Romans 5:17a tells us that “those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.” This divine principle stands in stark contrast to the world’s creed, where authority is seized through achievement and self-reliance. Instead, God invites us to open our hearts to His grace, allowing His strength to be manifested in our weakness.

Reflect upon the prodigal son’s return in Luke 15:11-32. He expected a servant’s position, yet his father lavished on him all the honors of a beloved son. This startling grace, undeserved and freely given, became the gateway to his new life. Similarly, before we can truly rule in life’s circumstances, we must learn to put aside our striving and simply receive from God’s bountiful hand.

As you embrace this posture of receiving, spiritual maturity develops. Dependency on God becomes the bedrock of your walk, cultivating a heart posture that glorifies God. Embrace His righteousness as a gift, not a reward. It’s in receiving His grace that we step into the fullness of the life He has intended for us—not by our might but by His Spirit.

    # Biblical Points:

    Abundance of Grace:
*Scripture:* “For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.” — John 1:16 (ESV)
*Reflection:* Receiving from the fullness of Christ enriches our lives with an abundance of transformative grace, empowering us to live not by law but by the Spirit. Let this grace guide your daily decisions, redirecting focus from earning favor to embracing His eternal love.

    Righteousness as a Gift:
*Scripture:* “And be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own… but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith.” — Philippians 3:9 (ESV)
*Reflection:* Paul speaks of a righteousness that is not self-derived but found in faith. This highlights our need to rely on God, recognizing that true authority derives from a grace-filled position of righteousness in Christ.

    The Humility of Receiving:
*Scripture:* “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” — Matthew 5:3 (ESV)
*Reflection:* Jesus begins the Beatitudes by highlighting humility as the entry point to His kingdom. Embrace the blessing found in acknowledging your need for God, welcoming His kingdom into every area of your life.

    # Reflection Questions:

    1. Why do I often strive to achieve rather than rest in the grace that God freely extends to me?
    2. What practical steps can I take today to cultivate a heart that is open and receptive to God’s abundant grace?
    3. How does understanding righteousness as a gift change my perspective on spiritual growth and daily living in Christ?

    # Memory Verse:
“For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.” — Romans 5:17a (ESV)

    # Closing Encouragement and Prayer:
May you find hope as you shift from self-driven achievement to resting in God’s incomparable grace. Know that true greatness in the kingdom lies in humbly receiving from God, allowing His Spirit to reign within you. Embrace this divine exchange of grace, knowing He is shaping you for eternal impact.

Let us pray: Father, help us to rest in Your abundant grace and lift our eyes to You. Teach us to receive Your righteousness, that we might reign in life with Christ. Open our hearts to your Spirit’s leading, and may our lives reflect Your kingdom here on earth. Amen.
