Faith and Civilisation: The Forgotten Foundation of Harvard
In 1636, a handful of Christian Puritans founded what would be known today as Harvard University. Their mission? “To advance learning and perpetuate it to posterity; dreading to leave an illiterate ministry to the churches.” Their goal was to train men in the Word of God so that wisdom would shape society. The motto they inscribed: “Truth for Christ and the Church”.
This was the original foundation on which Harvard University was built. This reminds us that Christianity did not only build churches; it built modern civilisation. Did you also know that Oxford, Cambridge, hospitals, literacy movements, and even human rights reforms all sprang from the light of Scripture?
Christianity did not just inspire worship — it birthed civilisation.
The Word Of God – The Civilisation of Humanity
Too often today, believers confine faith to worship gatherings or emotional inspiration. Yet Scripture calls us higher.
John’s Gospel 1:1-4 pulls us back before time: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. … In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.” (John 1:1-4). Here, John is describing the very foundation of human civilisation. The life in the Word is the light by which humanity is able to see, understand, and build – achieve civilisation.
David declared: “I have more understanding than all my teachers, for Your testimonies are my meditation.” (Psalm 119:99) And again: “For with You is the fountain of life; in Your light we see light.” (Psalm 36:9).
Faith Beyond Emotion
The Word was never meant to stop at devotion — it was given to produce wisdom that transforms societies.
Applied faith solves corruption, injustice, and poverty.
Applied wisdom leads with integrity, innovation, and discipline.
Applied light introduces solutions in healthcare, education, technology, and governance.
From Joseph in Egypt to Daniel in Babylon, God’s people changed nations not only through prayer, but through Spirit-filled wisdom.
Modern Civilisation At The Crossroads
We live in an age of information without illumination. Technology advances, yet moral confusion deepens. The world has knowledge but lacks wisdom. As Scripture says: “In Your light we see light.” (Psalm 36:9). Without God’s light, progress itself becomes dangerous.
The Future of Civilisation
The prophets foresaw it: “He will teach us His ways, so that we may walk in His paths.” (Isaiah 2:3). Revelation shows nations walking in the Lamb’s light (Revelation 21:23–24). Civilisation’s destiny lies not in human brilliance, but in divine illumination.
The Call Today
Believers must move beyond emotion into applied knowledge. In Christ is life, and “the life was the light of men” (John 1:4). That light built civilisations before — and it remains the only true foundation for human flourishing today.
This reminds me of the scripture in John 1, “He is the word and the word was the light of the world.” As you paraphrased it several years ago “the light was the civilization of the world.”
Absolutely! God’s light brings life and existence
