If you know a father leading his children astray by a bad example, pray for him to change. God can transform even the most hardened heart. And if you are a father or mother of this next generation, make it a matter of earnest prayer and determine to wake up to the tremendous responsibility God has charged you with to lead and provide a godly influence for your children and the younger generations in your life.

The influence parents have on their children is enormous. As a doctor in my psychiatry rotation, its amazing how many mental health problems stem from poor family structures. Also growing up I realise that those seemingly little morning devotions at home went a long way to shaping our perspectives or response to our surroundings. I see my son and daughter learning to pray and sing godly songs. I think we owe our children the right example because they are that next generation which we hope to see.

You’re right – so many mental health problems in adults stem from poor examples and trauma from their childhood. I can only imagine what you have seen and learned in a psychiatry rotation. As parents, we need to know the importance of renewing our minds – allowing God’s Word to change how we think (Rom 12:2) even if we ourselves have to unlearn poor thinking habits. We set a good example for our children by living with a renewed mind.

I have read this scripture for as long as I can remember but I didn’t realize that Sceva was not a name but a description of the man’s character. As always, Rick opens up subtle shades of meaning in the scriptures. I believe that the decisions that we make today are going a long way to shape the mindset of our children in the future. So, we must be intentional about showing them the right examples and teach to honor God.

I didn’t know that about Sceva either. Brings an entirely different perspective.
