You Too Can Innovate: Developing A Growth Mindset
Innovation is often seen as the domain of a select few—those with extraordinary talents or groundbreaking ideas. However, the truth is that every one of us has the capacity to innovate because we are created in God’s image. This divine imprint equips us with creativity, problem-solving abilities, and the potential to bring about positive change in our world.
We Are Sparks of Divine Creativity
In Genesis 1:27, we read, “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” Being made in the image of God means that we share in His creative nature. Just as God brought forth the universe from nothing, we too have the ability to create, innovate, and transform our surroundings.
The Power of a Growth Mindset
One of the key elements in unlocking our innovative potential is adopting a growth mindset. Coined by psychologist Carol Dweck, a growth mindset is the belief that our abilities and intelligence can be developed through dedication and hard work. This contrasts with a fixed mindset, which assumes that our innate talents are static and unchangeable.
A growth mindset encourages us to embrace challenges, learn from failures, and persist in the face of setbacks. It is the openness to unlearn, learn and relearn. It opens the door to continuous improvement and innovation. As Christians, we can draw inspiration from Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” This reminds us that with God’s help, we can overcome obstacles and achieve great things if we have the right perspective.
Innovate: Finding the New in the Old
Innovation doesn’t always mean creating something entirely new. Often, it involves finding new ways to use existing resources or reimagining traditional practices. Jesus Himself demonstrated this principle in His teachings. He often used familiar concepts and parables to convey profound spiritual truths, making the old new again.
In our own lives, we can look for opportunities to innovate by examining the familiar with fresh eyes. This might mean finding new applications for our skills, rethinking how we approach problems, or combining old ideas in novel ways. By doing so, we honour the creativity God has placed within us and contribute to the advancement of His kingdom.
Innovation Begins With Taking Responsibility: God Needs Partners, Not Robots
Some people question, “If there’s a God, why is there suffering in the world?” Others believe it is solely God’s responsibility to solve all their problems, often engaging in prayer or religious rituals to move God to act. However, it is important to recognise that God has already done His part. It is usually up to us to discover our role in His plan.
Proverbs 25:2 states, “It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter is the glory of kings.” This highlights our responsibility to explore and exploit what God has already provided. Within every challenge lies an opportunity for discovery and innovation. Just as God brought light out of darkness, we too can find solutions within our challenges.
We need to look beyond the visible to see the invisible. Tables, chairs, books, medicine, and food are inside a tree, but someone has to discover these possibilities. It will remain only a tree until someone thinks differently about it. We must move beyond the traditional mindset that places all responsibility on God. He has given us the earth to multiply, subdue, replenish, and dominate. God desires to work with us as partners, guiding us to utilize the resources He has provided for our sustenance on earth.
Practical Steps to Foster Innovation
1. Cultivate Curiosity: one of the best questions to ask is Why? Not in despondency rather ask questions to seek new knowledge and be open to learning from diverse sources. Challenge yourself to find new and more effective ways to do the same thing.
2. Embrace Failure and don’t celebrate success too long: View failures as learning opportunities rather than setbacks. Reflect on what went wrong and how you can improve. Don’t try to be perfect the first time. Celebrate your little or big wins but not for too long. Constantly seek to improve on your last success or failure. Forget the past and move to greater heights.
3. Collaborate with the right minds: Work with others to share ideas and perspectives. Collaboration often sparks creativity and leads to innovative solutions. He that works with the wise will be wise. Collaboration allows for constructive feedback and to leverage the inspiration or experience of others to improve.
4. Stay Persistent: Innovation requires perseverance. No man who puts his hands on the Plow and looks back is fit for the Kingdom according to Jesus. We need faith and patience to fulfil our purpose. Keep pushing forward, even when progress seems slow because at the appointed time your success will be evident to all.
Innovation is not reserved for a select few; it is a gift from God that resides within each of us. By embracing a growth mindset and seeking new ways to use the old, we can unlock our creative potential and make a meaningful impact. As members of the Kingdom Innovation Hub, let us encourage one another to explore, create, and innovate, all for the glory of God. It is God’s good pleasure to give us the Kingdom. Let’s embrace a growth mindset and glorify God through our creative abilities.
